Torrevieja's Virgen del Carmen Cultural Centre held the annual Women's Awards gala on Thursday.
The recipient of a special recognition for her personal struggle was 80 year only Angelita Parodi, who still works to help support her family and represents all the grandmothers who have looked after and still look after their grandschildren.
The other prize went to Estela Prieto, deputy director of the Agrupación de voluntarios de Torrevieja (Torrevieja Volunteers Group) and president of the Vega Baja Civil Protection Groups Association, for her volunteer and professional work in a position normally held by men, and for winning the respect of her colleagues.
Mayor José Manuel Dolón praised the struggle and sacrifice and commitment to freedom and equality of Angelita Parodi.
Councillor Fabiana Ibarra said the gala recognises the efforts of real women who work, care and educate for our society.
Angelita said she never expected to be recognised like this and that she gets her strength from the love of her family and friends and Torrevieja.
Estela said she is very happy to be a woman and praised her male and female colleagues but has had to work twice as hard to prove herself.
