February has been classified as a very cold and wet month in Torrevieja, according to the data from the Mastral Project weather stations. They measured an average temperature of 11.6ºC (1.6ºC below average) and rainfall of 45 litres per square metre.
We have to go back to 2012 to find a February as cold as this one, and back to 1993 for one that was rainier, when there was 80 l/m2.
Although some days were hotter than usual, even exceeding 22ºC in the middle of the month, the cold temperatures at the start of the month made the average lower than the period of reference of the last 30 years.
Most of the rain fell on the first two days of the month, which totalled 35 l/m2 when the average for February is only 25 l/m2.
Data from State Meteorology Agency AEMET indicates the whole Valencian Community was also wet and very cold. The average temperature was 7.2ºC (1.6ºC below average) and precipitation was 49.5 l/m2 (38% higher than the period of reference from 1981-2010).
