The Spanish Dragon Boat Association has chosen Torrevieja to host the II International Dragon Boat Festival in Spain.
The event will be held on Playa del Acequión on Saturday November 11th between 8:30am and 5pm
Sebastián Espí of the Spanish Dragon Boat Association said it is one of the biggest competitions in Europe because it is the only one with an intercontinental category.
These vessels are originally from China and date back over 2,000 years. Traditionally they have 10 to 20 crew with paddles, plus a drummer and a steer, and a dragons head and tail are carved into the prow and the stern.
Mayor José Manuel Dolón said the sport is becoming popular around the world and the arrival of crews from different countries will promote Torrevieja around the world.
More than 200 athletes will be taking part, including 100 from countries like Canada, Cyprus, England, Italy and the USA, and the rest from various regions of Spain.
As well as competing against each other, there will be an attempt to break the Guinness World Record for the greatest distance by dragon boat in 24 hours in relay. This will see 250 paddlers from seven countries trying to go further than 247 kilometres. They will start at the Marina Internacional de Torrevieja at 10pm on Saturday and should finish at the same time on Sunday the 12th.
From November 3rd-10th Torrevieja has been an international Dragon Boat training camp with some of the best athletes in the discipline from around the world. All these event s have been organised by the Spanish Dragon Boat Association with Torrevieja’s two Club Naúticos, the Town Hall and Thai Sport Mar Menor.
