St Patrick's Day is back again on March 17th and Orihuela Costa has the biggest and best celebrations to make everywhere else on the Costa green with envy. The Irish community of Cabo Roig hopes to welcome even more people than the 10,000 who were estimated to have turned up last year.
Most of the bars and restaurants have special themed activities all day, including live music and traditional Irish food to line your bellies before indulging in a bit of Guinness or Jameson.
Everyone will start gathering from about 12pm at the Cabo Roig roundabout end of the strip off the N-332, near Slievenamon bar, where local radio station TKO FM wil be putting on a roadshow. From 2:30pm there will be a show with live entertainment and there will be face painters, majorettes, street magicians and even sword swallowers mingling with the crowds.
The grand parade is due to start at about 4:30-5pm, starting with a rally of classic motorbikes roaring their way along Calle del Mar up to the health centre and back down Calle Cielo to the roundabout. They will be followed by 28 contingents, including five marching bands, 15 floats, Irish dancers and all kinds of costumed characters.
Doubtless many of the participants and visitors will continue the party well into the night, making it a true community celebration not to be missed.
