Orihuela Costa votes for cleaner streets
Councillor Sabina Goretti Galindo has announced the projects to be carried out by the council in 2018 that have been chosen by residents by voting for their favourites last month, which have a budget of €60,000 per district of the municipality (€660,000 in total).
Districts 10 and 11 were Orihuela Costa and residents who voted in this area chose for the council to acquire a jet washer for cleaning the streets, and for the monthly disinfection of community rubbish bins.
In other areas, people voted for repairs to the Plaza de Monserrate, a skate park in La Aparecida and equipment for the auditorium in San Bartolomé, among others.
"Democracy cannot just be voting once every four years," said the councillor.
This year residents were able to make their proposals on a website and then vote for those that had been assessed to be legally possible and affordable.
There was a public awareness campaign with articles in the media, as well as meetings with residents in every area, said Galindo.
There was a total of 301 proposals, of which 94 were decided to be possible. In the end 985 people voted (1.47% of the electoral roll). 52% were men and 48% women. 40.1% of voters were aged 36-50, 21.8% were 51-65, 13.6% were over 65, and only 8.5% were 16-25.
