The Guardia Civil arrested a truck driver on the N-340 in Totana on Friday, who was a resident of Orihuela and five times over the alcohol limit.

A patrol from Lorca saw signs that the driver of the heavy goods vehicle was under the influence and stopped the vehicle.

The 45 year old Lithuanian man tested positive for 0.77 and 0.75 milligrams of alcohol per litre of air breathed, which is five times the limit of 0.15mg/l for professional drivers.

The vehicle was transporting watermelons and vegetables from Lébor in Totana to the UK. The officers immobilised it until the company that owns it was able to send another driver to collect it that night and continue the journey.

The suspect will face a fast track trial at Court of Instruction number 3 in Totana (Murcia).

I live on a small badly maintained lane outside Orihuela with a 10 tonne limit but lorries of 40 tonnes use it every day. Many have been told they make our houses shake and most houses have serious cracks. A petition to the Town Hall signed by 103 residents and family was almost completely ignored. Drivers of these huge trucks are frequently seen on their mobiles and now to think some may be drunk, when we already take our lives in our hands going out of our gates. It's only a matter of time until someone is killed or injured on my road as these speeding lorries can't stop quickly. There is no respect for residents at all. There needs to be more spot checks and the local police need to start working for a living instead of just doing school crossings.
