Great atmosphere for Virgen del Carmen activities in Torrevieja port

The greasy pole competition and floating artefacts race entertained the crowd Torrevieja port held one of the most traditional activities for the Virgen del Carmen fiestas today, the Cucaña Martitima, a grease smeared pole which participants, especially young people, must traverse to reach the flag at the end before they inevitably fall in the water. First ever tours of the Torrevieja Salt Lakes

Visits to the iconic local industry on the Tourist Train started today Guided tours of the Torrevieja Salt Lakes began this morning, which Councillor Fanny Serrano said was “historic” after having managed to complete many procedures to make it possible. These 50 minute excursions around the different phases of the salt production will be available until September the 30th. It is the third food guide after ones about the city and the coast. Court clears the way for Orihuela Costa beach bars to return

Services could be open by the end of this month, claims Town Hall Orihuela Town Hall has announced that the Central Administrative Court for Contract Appeals has turned down the two appeals that have been holding up the process to adjudicate the new beach bars and services contract. Celebrating the saviour of the sea

Virgen del Carmen fiestas in Torrevieja this weekend Torrevieja is deeply linked to the sea by its traditional fishing industry and so its patron saint is the Virgen del Carmen, guardian of fishermen (and women), amongst other things. This is why the celebrations for these fiestas have a distinct nautical bent, including a procession with the statue of the Virgen which involves her being taken aboard one of the local fishing boats and taken for a jib around the harbour.
