The Phoenix Solos group, based in Torrevieja, was formed in January 2001 by Joy Warwick and Malcolm Peasgood. Saddened by the closure of their first singles club “Solo’s International”, they decided to form a new one from the previous club’s ashes and name it “Phoenix Solos” accordingly.

Vice-president, Peter said: “There is a great need for a club like this. There are a lot of lonely single people out there. It’s been a lifeline for a lot of people who have been in despair and this has really helped them.”

Essentially, the club aims to provide a social setting for the widowed, divorced or single to network, plan activities or just have a chat.

To join Phoenix Solos you must be over 50 and single and all nationalities are welcome. The club now has many members, made up of British, Scandinavians, Belgians and Polish amongst others.

The group meet every Monday for a coffee and get-together, which may then be followed by a talk, a quiz, bowling and then lunch for those who fancy it. Other activities such as walks, day trips or BBQ’s take place on various days throughout the week.

Although this is a club for singles, many couples have been formed over the years that still attend together, and all members have become great friends.

Some people have become a member solely to make friends. When asked whether he had a girlfriend, oldest member Henry, 81 replied: “No, they’re too expensive.”

Rosemary, a member since 2001 from Sweden commented: “It’s lovely. It’s our second home. We meet up with old friends and we make new ones.”

New members are more than welcome to join and membership is 5€ for the year. The weekly Monday-morning coffee meetings take place at the The Marina Club, International Marina Puerto Deportivo, 03180 Torrevieja.
