Spain has received 31 million euros from the European Research Council (ERC) through the funding for the 2018 Consolidator Grants, which will distribute a total of 573 million euros among 291 European researchers.
With 16 grants, Spain is the fifth-largest EU beneficiary, behind the United Kingdom (55), Germany (38), France (32) and the Netherlands (19).
The Consolidator Grants are of up to two million euros for researchers with between seven and twelve years of post-doctoral experience. This call for proposals from the leading body for research of excellence in Europe attracted high-level foreign researchers and facilitated the return of Spanish scientists who were working overseas.
Of the Spanish projects selected, seven are in the field of Physics and Engineering, five are in the field of Life Sciences, and four are in the field of Social Sciences and Humanities.
