Virgen del Carmen fiestas in Torrevieja this weekend
Torrevieja is deeply linked to the sea by its traditional fishing industry and so its patron saint is the Virgen del Carmen, guardian of fishermen (and women), amongst other things.
This is why the celebrations for these fiestas have a distinct nautical bent, including a procession with the statue of the Virgen which involves her being taken aboard one of the local fishing boats and taken for a jib around the harbour.
The celebrations start this Saturday July the 14th and end on Monday the 16th. Here is the programme:
Saturday July 14th
12pm – Latin sail boat regatta.
7:30pm – Mass in the Sagrado Corazón de Jesús church to honour deceased fishermen with the José Hódar choir.
9:30pm – Concert by Space Elephants at Paseo Vista Alegre, free entry.
Sunday July 15th
2pm – Caldero (fish and rice stew) cooking contest with live music and a Charanga (traditional band procession) at the Lonja de Pescado (fish market). All the fishermen are invited.
12pm – Torrevieja Latin Sail Boat Association offers anyone related to the world of sailing a trip around the bay in one of their boats. At the Muelle Pesquero (fishing quay).
Monday July 16th
8am – Diana – singers and Charanga band make music around the town.
11:30am – Cucaña (greasy pole) competition. Painful for participants, hilarious for spectators.
12:30pm – Floating artefacts race – homemade ‘boats’ and their crews compete for various prizes.
7:30pm – Eucharist in the Inmaculada Concepción church with the Ricardo Lafuente choir.
Followed by Grand Procession with the Unión Musical Torrevejense band around this route: Plaza de la Constitución, Concepción, Paseo Vista Alegre and Puerto Pesquero (fishing port), where the Virgen will be carried aboard the Samuel Ruso fishing boat for the Maritime Procession. After this the Salve Marineras hymn is sung by the Ricardo Lafuente choir and the Unión Musical Torrevejense band. Then the procession continues to the Plaza Waldo Calero, Calles Chapaprieta and Caballero de Rodas to the Inmaculada Concepción church.
