A man has been arrested by the Guardia Civil in Torrevieja on suspicion of torching his own car in an insurance scam
The 66-year-old resident of the town is accused of the crimes of attempted fraud and arson, after he is said to have faked the theft and destruction of his own car, valued at around 20,000€.
The investigation began after officers were made aware of the burnt-out car on a public road and whilst informing the owner became suspicious of his reaction.
The man had first said that he was surprised as his car was believed to have been parked in the garage of his house, and so it must have been stolen.
The investigation continued, meanwhile the man visited his insurance broker on a number of occasions immediately after the incident, getting increasingly frustrated, angry and even violent, hitting the desk of his agent because they were unable to pay out on account of the investigation.
The investigation concluded after the officers believed that as the evidence given by the owner “began to incur numerous contradictions” which “did nothing but endorse the evidence obtained by agents”, they could only conclude that “he was committing insurance fraud”, and so he was subsequently arrested.
