The Saint Petersburg Ballet will perform Sleeping Beauty in Torrevieja in August
The Saint Petersburg Ballet, directed by Andrey Batalov, will be performing the award-winning Ballet, Sleeping Beauty, in Torrevieja´s International Auditorium on Tuesday, 7 August, 2018, starting at 10:00 p.m.
With music by Tchaikovsky, and original choreography by Marius Petipa, the St. Petersburg Ballet is one of the oldest schools in the world, with almost two and a half centuries of history.
Sleeping beauty is a ballet by Piotr I. Tchaikovsky, in a prologue and three acts. It premiered in 1890 at the Mariinsky Theater in St. Petersburg. The libretto is by Ivan Vsevolozhsky based on the story “The Sleeping Beauty of the Forest” by Charles Perrault, although Tchaikovsky and his librettist worked with the Brothers Grimm version to situate the plot of his ballet. The ballet also presents other characters from the fabulous universe of Perrault, such as Puss in Boots or Little Red Riding Hood and the wolf. The original choreography is by the great French choreographer Marius Petipa.
This ballet tells the story in which King Florestán XXIV and the Queen have invited all the fairies to the christening of their daughter, Princess Aurora, to be their godmothers. While they arrive with gifts for the baby, they are interrupted by the presence of Carabosse, the evil fairy. She is angry at not having been invited and gives Aurora a spindle, announcing that one day the princess will prick a finger with it and die. The Fairy of the Lilacs, who has yet to offer her gift, promises that Aurora will not die, but will fall into a deep sleep from which she will be awakened by the kiss of a prince. And so it will happen on her 16th birthday.
