Activities, games, concerts and parties until July the 17th
Algorfa fired the starting pistol for its patron saint fiestas in honour of the Virgen del Carmen on July the 6th with the Coronation of the Queens and Fiesta Clubs (Peñas), and the reading of the official announcement. Don’t worry if you missed it though because there are still plenty of activities to join in with the celebrations this week.
Mayor Manuel Ros compared the fiestas with a race in which “if we all behave respectfully towards each other then everybody wins” and encouraged people to come and enjoy themselves in the streets with family and friends.
On Tuesday the 10th from 6pm there will be a giant water slide along Calle El Sol (by Mesón El Viejo restaurant). Make sure you bring a lilo or other inflatable to join in. At 10pm is a concert in the Plaza de España by the Algorfa Musical and Cultural Society.
On Wednesday July the 11th from 6pm there will be traditional games to play in the playground of the Miguel de Cervantes Primary College. At 9:30pm the Grand Prix (like It’s a Knockout) games between the fiesta clubs will be held at the Polideportivo sports centre. Prepare for excitement and hilarity!
On Thursday the 12th at 11:30am in the library there will be handicrafts. Later at 10pm there will be a Festival of Dance performed by the Mary Girona Academy students. For those who aren’t ready for bed by then, the Barraca (street bar) Arenica Fina de los 70s opens with a disco from midnight.
On Friday July the 13th there will be a dominoes tournament all day from 9am to 7pm at el Chiringuito. Then at 7pm there will be Pirate Adventure theatre show at La Ermita, (the hermitage) natural area. Later at 11pm there will be a concert by Nyno Vergas in the Plaza de España and then the Barraca street bars open at midnight.
From 11am on Saturday the 14th, enjoy lots of fun and refreshing water activities at the sports centre. The multicoloured big fancy dress parade is at 8:30pm with music and prizes for the fiesta clubs with the best costumes. The Etiqueta Show band will play a concert in the Plaza de España at 11pm and the street bars open at midnight with a disco at Arenica Fina de los 70s.
On Sunday the 15th when at 11am there will be an exhibition of antique motorbikes in the Plaza de España. The Floral Offering to the Virgen del Carmen procession starts at 8:30pm from the library with the ringing of church bells and musical accompaniment by the dulzaina (traditional reed instrument) band El Cascabot. the grand finale is a Cuban Fiesta in the Plaza de España from 9:30pm with the amazing band Chocolat Son. There will be teachers giving classes in this beautiful dance and you can try delicious Cuban food and cocktails.
Monday the 16th is the Festival of the Patron with a procession from 11am to collect the fiesta queens and the Algorfa Musical and Cultural Society to the Town Hall and then the Parish Church for Mass at noon. at 9pm the Solemn and Majestic Procession with the statue of the Virgen will take place, followed by a magnificent firework display. At 9:30pm in the Plaza de España there will be a variety show with TV and singing star Sandra Bruman, María Gracía performing popular Spanish songs, ballet by Sofia Sánchez and comedy by Manolito Royo.
Finally, Tuesday July 17th is Morera (Mulberry) Day, a chance for everyone to enjoy in their own way.
