A weekend of camping and activities in the countryside

The annual pilgrimage in honour of the Virgen del Rocio in Torrevieja is an opportunity for a weekend of camping and activities in the countryside. More than 500 people are expected to join in, including some on horseback and in carts.

This year it takes place on June 16th and 17th, starting at 11am on Saturday after Mass when the statue of the Virgen will be carried from El Salvador parish church in Torreblanca to the Municipal Recreational Area of Lo Albentosa.

There she will be placed in her sanctuary and given an offering of flowers.

In the afternoon there will be equestrian activities, sevillanas dancing, children’s games and presentations to the participants and tournament winners.

At midnight there will be an outdoor service accompanied by the Hermandad Choir, officiated by El Salvador parish priest Don Franscisco Miravete.

The campers will wake at 9am on Sunday with drumming and churros (like doughnuts) with hot chocolate. At 1pm there will be another outdoor service with the choir and all the pilgrims. Finally at 7pm all the horse riders, carriages and pilgrims will accompany the statue of the Virgen del Rocío to La Mata parish church and the Salve Rociera hymn will be sung.
