Foster homes needed for dogs, horses, ferret and a pirahna

An operation by the Guardia Civil in Torrevieja has forced the Municipal Animal Shelter to issue a public appeal for people to adopt some of the animals in its care.

The Guardia Civil arrested 30 members of a supposed criminal gang and seized 26 animals, including six dogs owned by the suspects that were roaming near a finca in El Limonar.

Councillor Carmen Morate explained a court asked the Town Hall to find them new homes but the shelter already has 35 animals and not enough space for all of them.

She said there are 13 adult galgos, 10 galgo puppies, a Rottweiler, a podenco, a mini Doberman, three horses, a ferret and a piranha.

The piranha was on display in a jar at the press conference.

Morate stressed that even though the animal shelter is being extended, the number of abandonments triples in the summer.

A volunteer is looking after the ten puppies at their house and they will be old enough to be adopted (6 weeks) in a fortnight.

Because the animals are wards of the court, anyone who adopts one will have to be interview and approved by the judge.
