Various activities on World Environment Day, June the 5th
The activities to commemorate World Environment Day, Tuesday June the 5th, start at 10:30am with the inauguration of a botanical garden at grove I-6 by the River Segura.
The garden is dedicated to growing, researching, conserving and exhibiting different species of palm tree. In it you can find different varieties and examples from other countries, as well as plants of interest like joint pine, juniper, lavender and olive.
“This garden is the fruit of an agreement with Miguel Hernández University in 2013 that could not be carried out until now when everyone in Orihuela can enjoy it,” said Councillor Miguel Ángel Fernández. The garden also has an watering system provided by the drinking water company Hidraqua.
At 6:30pm in the Casino Orcelitano there will be a prize giving for the competition to photograph natural spaces in the municipality. After this at 7pm is the presentation of a book about carnivores of the Sierra de Orihuela, the first scientific work about the community of mammals in the area. Then at 8pm an exhibition of the 20 finalists in the photo competition will be inaugurated. The exhibition will be moved to the Fundación Caja Mediterráneo from June 6th-15th for everyone to visit and enjoy.
