1,500 square metres of bushes incinerated by lakeside houses

A fire in the Lagoons of La Mata and Torrevieja Natural Park on Sunday forced 15 residents of homes a few metres away to be evacuated. The evacuation was a preventative measure and in the end the fire was controlled and did not reach the area of homes on Calles Miguel de Unamuno and Pablo Neruda.

The fire started at 3:50pm in an area of bushes by Torrevieja salt lake and ended up incinerating 1,500 square metres, according to sources from the Provincial Fire Consortium. Three vehicles were despatched from Vega Baja Sur fire station and they managed to control the fire at around 4:40pm.

At first residents of the nearby houses had tried to put out the fire by themselves, with an extinguisher, because it was spreading so quickly. But finally it was necessary for the fire brigade to intervene, who did so quickly and prevented the situation from getting any worse.
