National winter championships from Friday-Sunday
Torrevieja will host the Lifesaving and Rescue Winter Championship of Spain at the municipal indoor swimming pool from February 23rd-25th.
It is organised by the Lifesaving and Rescue Federations of Spain (RFESS) and the Valencian Community (FSSCV) and Torrevieja Town Hall.
They expect 414 athletes from 43 clubs all over the country to compete in the different events.
The competition will take place from 9am-2pm and 5:30pm-9pm each day so the pool will be closed for public swimming from Friday to Sunday, although anyone can come as watch as a spectator.
Laura Polo of the FSSCV explained the events will include rope throwing, 200 metre swimming with obstacles, 50 metres swimming with a mannequin, and 100 metres with a mannequin and flippers.
Councillor Víctor Ferrández said it is an enormous pleasure to host this competition between athletes from a profession that saves lives. He noted it will also bring about 1,000 to the municipality out of the tourist season, between the competitors and their companions.
Jesús Troyano of the RFESS said they are happy to be holding another championship in Torrevieja and noted that about half of the competitors are women, which is a big change on a few years ago when there were many more men.
