The episode of unstable weather that has been affecting Torrevieja since Tuesday reached its height yesterday (Thursday) afternoon. This happened with a heavy storm which unloaded no less than 15 litres per square metre of rain, according to the data collected by the Mastral Project.

After a cloudy morning and a few sunny spells, the sky darkened at about 5pm, giving was just before 6 to an intense downpour accompanied by an abundance of lighting. All that rain fell within half an hour at intensities that peaked at 160 litres per square metre per hour.

Around the Vega Baja there were also heavy downpours, measuring 10 l/m2 in Orihuela and 14 in Rojales town centre.

The streets of Torrevieja were flooded and started causing problems for traffic, although after the rain stopped at about 6:30pm the town returned to normality within a few hours.

The instability was still evident on Friday morning but there was much less chance of rain and no further storm’s like yesterday’s are expected.
