Free mammograms at Hospital Quirónsalud Torrevieja

Campaign for World Breast Cancer Day from October 17th-21st The Hospital Quirónsalud Torrevieja has set up a campaign to prevent breast cancer by performing free mammograms to mark the world awareness day for this condition, which is October 19th. Early diagnosis with a mammogram reduces the mortality rate for this illness by 15-20%. Women who would like the test can do so between October 17th and 21st by telephoning 966 92 57 61 or email [email protected] or use the website to get an appointment time, as long as there are still places available. The hospital will also have a breast cancer information desk open on Wednesday from 10am-2pm in the Plaza de la Constitución, in conjunction with members of the charity Afecáncer, at which they will be offering advice and handing out a pamphlet of guidance. At 12pm that day at the hopsital balloons will be released and people will be able to leave messages on a board for anyone they know affected by breast cancer. Oncology doctor Antonio Brugarolas said the Quironsalud Hospital has successfully been applying ‘a la carte’ treatment to patients, after genetic analysis of their tumours. Biopsies analyse all the genes related to the response or resistance to chemotherapy, showing how the tumour will respond to each of the available anti cancer drugs and which will be most effective for each patient. This has...

Exhibition in Orihuela shows how residents won against all odds The exhibition ‘Torremendo nunca duerme: 25 años de lucha’ (never sleeps: 20 years of fighting) can be visited in Orihuela at the office of Cambiemos, on Calle Santa Justa, until October 28th. This collection of documents and photos collected by the residents’ association shows how all the inhabitants of this rural village fought to stop a rubbish dump from being installed very close to their homes. “This is not just our problem but all of Orihuela’s and we want the whole county to see it,” said Sebastián Andreu, president of the Torremendo Multicultural Association. “It also tells the story of the corruption surrounding rubbish in the south of the Valencian Community” and contains many news articles about the businessman Ángel Fenoll, a key character in the ‘Brugal Case’. The residents fought for 25 years but the hardest time was between May 2001 and June 2003, when the village was literally on guard to prevent any trucks from dumping rubbish in the area. Rosario Martínez explained how the residents took it in turns to watch the fields 24 hours a day and managed to stop trucks full of rubbish from passing on more than one occasion. This fight is still relevant in the Vega Baja area as setting up a new dump in the area still has not been ruled...
