Orihuela Town Hall has announced its activities to mark World Car Free Day, which is on September 22nd. Councillor Miguel Ángel Fernández said the council will offer free bus travel during this day on the Costa Azul and Sigüenza company lines around Orihuela Costa, Vega Baja Hospital and local villages, including Desamparados (University of Miguel Hernández), Molins, Arneva, Hurchillo, La Murada, Raiguero de Bonanza, La Campaneta, and La Aparecida.
“We want to promote the use of public transport to reduce pollution in a more effective way,” he said, reminding that the Town Hall has committed to the EU’s Covenant of Mayors, which aims to reduce greenhouse gases and pollution and improve air quality.
Also on Thursday, a circuit will be set up on the Glorieta Gabriel Miró in the city centre for bicycles, tricycles, Segways and an electric car. 200 schoolchildren will visit this to learn ways to reduce the harmful effects of vehicles but it is open to everyone else as well.
Fernández reminded that Orihuela is also part of the Spanish Network of Pro Bicycle Cities (RCXB) and will also join in with Intelligent Mobility Week.
