Record highs in Torrevieja

Mastral Project temperature records

A mass of tropical air from Africa has pushed thermometers up to about 40ºC today (Monday June 13th). In Orihuela the high was 39.7ºC at 4:28pm, in San Bartolomé it reached 39.2ºC, in Jacarilla 38.9ºC, in Rojales 38.6ºC, and in Guardamar 37.2ºC.

In Torrevieja, according to the Mastral Project data, the high was 37.6ºC in the town centre and above 36ºC almost everywhere else. The figure of 37.6ºC is more than 2ºC above the record for the month of June in Torrevieja since records began in 1927. the previous record was 35.5ºC in June 2004.

But is so much heat in June normal? If we look back at the database the answer is yes. For Orihuela in the sixth month of 1949 it reached 44ºC, in 1965 42.5ºC was recorded, in 2001 it got up to 41ºC, and the most recent case was in June 2012, when it was 40.8ºC, we are told by MeteOrihuela.

And so this torrid day has become the hottest of 2016 so far, but it should also be the hottest of this week as over the coming days the mercury will start to drop noticeably. Nevertheless, it is thought it will still be very hot, just less so. As the weekend approaches is when it could be more “refreshing” with the arrival of a trough in atmospheric pressure, which could even bring the odd evening shower.
