Illusions, are they magic or science?

Fascinating exhibition in Torrevieja port for the summer A new exhibition opened in Torrevieja today which asks visitors if the tricks used by illusionists are magic or science. It is in a 400 square metre marquee in the port area and will be open until August 31st. The exhibition has been organised by the bank La Caixa’s social work foundation as part of its work to promote science. Mayor José Manuel Dolón said visitors can “find out how marvellous scenes and feelings are created, and how we can be fooled by manipulating the signals that we receive through our senses”. Its curator, Ignacio Morado explained it shows how it is possible to make someone grow and shrink, like Alice in Wonderland; how the same piece of music played by the same musician with the same skill but in different settings can produce different sensations; or how what we experience through just one of our senses is not at all reliable and the combination of different stimuli can drastically alter our perception of reality. There are interactive explanations of how illusions are created to make it seem as if we are seeing something completely improbable. This can use techniques including psychology, communication, staging, physics, chemistry, architecture, engineering or maths. Morado said the exhibition “is not just fun but we also want people to learn, to become curious and keep finding...
