CES Project requires them to know the local bylaw A conference for people who want to be allowed to feed stray cats in Torrevieja was attended by 35 people last Saturday. They were informed about the municipal bylaw on this matter, about the CES (Catch and Sterilise) project and about living with cats. All these people were issued with licences allowing them to feed stray cats. Councillor Carmen Morate introduced Ana Llopis, the CES Project coordinator; Lourdes Martínez, the municipal animals shelter volunteer in charge of cat adoptions; and Antonio Moreno, who is making a tour of Spain on a bicycle to give talks against animal abuse. Morate explained the bylaw prohibits feeding abandoned animals, especially dogs, cats and pigeons, on other people’s property and certain specified public zones for safety and public health reasons. If feeding is allowed in other public areas it must be with dry food and the affected area must be cleaned up afterwards. “It is important to leave the feeding area clean and never use leftover home made food as this bothers residents because it can be a source of infection, attracts insects and is generally unhealthy, aside from maybe being bad for the animals,” said the councillor. Ana Llopis explained the CES Project volunteers who catch stray cats have traps from the Town Hall and take them to the vet to be sterilised....Read More
Victim managed to escape and called the Guardia Civil The Guardia Civil have arrested a Brazilian man in Torrevieja for allegedly having held a pregnant woman captive in her home for at least ten hours. He also allegedly demanded money and threatened to kill her and her family with a large knife he was carrying. It seems the victim had rented a room in the 37 year old man’s flat a few days before. The events occurred on February 12th when the victim, who is 33 years old, managed to escape when the kidnapper was not paying attention and told the Guardia Civil. When he noticed the patrols arrive he tried to flee across the rooftop, breaking the entrance from inside the building. Once inside, seeing he was cornered, he threw an object onto the wasteground next door, where the officers found more than half a kilo of hashish. During the search of his home, they also found 43 grams of cocaine, precision scales and tools for making ‘wraps’, a large knife, several mobile phones, jewellery and various electrical appliances. These last items are presumed to have been stolen in recent robberies in the area, which is being investigated. The victim had an anxiety attack and was taken to a nearby medical centre, although a few minutes after checking her she was moved to Torrevieja Hospital because they feared...Read More
