Dates and times for this year’s parades and events The programme for the Torrevieja 2016 Carnival began on Saturday with the the official announcement and the coronation of the queens and the raffle on Sunday. Councillor África Celdrán explained that this gala, as well as the Drag Queen Contest on Saturday January 23rd, the Chirigotas (comedy song) contest on the 31st, and the infants’, juveniles’ and end of fiesta dances, on January 28th, and February 5th and 13th, will be held in a marquee with capacity for 1,600 people in the Eras de la Sal, because the theatre is closed. The senior citizens’ dance will be at the Municipal Leisure Centre (CMO) on Thursday, February 4th. Carnaval president Julio Melchor Ruiz said the competition parade will be on Sunday, February 7th and will leave from the Plaza de la Asunción at 4pm. With a budget of €826,145 the Provincial Council of Alicante is going to remodel the seaside promenade in Torrevieja from Punta Margalla to Avenida Habaneras. The contract was awarded on December 30th and the job is expected to take 4 months from when the order to start work is signed. The project consists of redesigning the promenade to wake it more accessible and comfortable for users. For this, the pavement will be replaced and litter bins and benches installed. The plans also include new lights and putting the gardens, playgrounds and exercise apparatus in order. More than 100 people took part in the Senda del Mar dog walk on Sunday Despite the low temperatures, many residents of Pilar de la Horadada brought their pets to take part in the Senda del Mar dog walk, organised by the Town Hall. At about 9:30am more than 100 people and their animals gathered at the Puente del Beso, by the Virgen del Pilar school, Priest José Antonio García blessed the traditional Rosquillo biscuits of San Antón (the patron saint of animals) and all the dogs. All the pets also received a free dog food bar before they set off. Once everybody reached Las Higuericas beach, hot chocolate and churros doughnuts were handed out.
