With the month of August already coming to an end, the Town Hall of Redován is busy making plans to continue the summer fever throughout September, to honour its Patron Saints: San Miguel Arcángel and the Virgen de la Salud (Our Lady of Health). The fiesta kicks off on the 30th of August, continuing right through until the 29th of September, offering what the town hall claims is one of the most comprehensive activity programmes in the region.
The fiesta will be officially opened with the election and coronation of the Carnival Queens, hosted by María García Guillén. From there the fiesta will provide a blend of exciting activities for all ages, including a colour parade and a White Party – one of the biggest events of the year for Redován, which last year attracted over 3,000 people and this year is in the Plaza Miguel Hernández at 9pm on the 13th. To reserve a table and chairs, call the fiestas councillor on 96 675 4550 or 644 22 99 37.
The fiestas will also welcome the return of the Wacky Races soap box car rally on September 13th from 5pm, with the race starting at 7pm on Calle Los Pasos. If you want to build your own and join in, more information and registration is available at the Town Hall from August 25th-September 11th.
Still at the heart of the fiesta month are the main fancy dress parade on the 20th, country show and the Festival of Dance of Local Singing on the 19th at 10pm in the Town Hall Plaza. There are also several bull fights on the 9th and 10th.
New for this year will be the “Battle of the Barracas” (Fiesta Club Bars), which will take place on September 7th, when representatives from each tent, seven crews altogether, fight it out to be the best hosts of the festival. A serenade to the Virgen de la Salud will be performed on the same evening, during a moving tribute in which many of the locals usually participate.
There are also several other concerts, dances, processions and religious ceremonies amongst the many other activities. The full fiesta programme is available to download (in Spanish) from the Town Hall website at http://www.redovan.es/wp-content/uploads/2014/08/RED14programafiestas.pdf.
This year the programme cover was designed by Estela Escudero Ruíz, with her excellent representation of a palm tree, the symbol of the region.
Charity fun run
As part of the celebrations, the town is once again supporting the charity Cáritas, with a fun run that will take place on September 28th. The race will cover a distance of 5 to 10 kilometres, starting from the Plaza Miguel Hernández. The town hall has created a web page offering further information on how to join the fun. http://www.redovan.es/carrera/.
