Redován presents month of fiestas

Local village has 30 days of exciting activities in the offing With the month of August already coming to an end, the Town Hall of Redován is busy making plans to continue the summer fever throughout September, to honour its Patron Saints: San Miguel Arcángel and the Virgen de la Salud (Our Lady of Health). The fiesta kicks off on the 30th of August, continuing right through until the 29th of September, offering what the town hall claims is one of the most comprehensive activity programmes in the region. The fiesta will be officially opened with the election and coronation of the Carnival Queens, hosted by María García Guillén. From there the fiesta will provide a blend of exciting activities for all ages, including a colour parade and a White Party – one of the biggest events of the year for Redován, which last year attracted over 3,000 people and this year is in the Plaza Miguel Hernández at 9pm on the 13th. Orihuela Mayor making swift recovery

Green Party leader suffered heart attack but says he will return to office “soon” The Mayor of Orihuela, Monserrate Guillén, gave thanks to all of his supporters on Thursday through his Facebook page, for the messages of appreciation and good health. The President of Los Verdes suffered a heart attack on the 12th of July, for which he had to undergo various medical procedures, including the implantation of three stents in his heart. The Mayor has since remained on medical leave from work, although today assured his followers on Facebook: “My recovery is going as planned and soon, when doctors consider it appropriate, I will be back to work.” He used the opportunity to comment that “Your thoughts have helped me a lot, to march onwards and get over this low period of illness.” Meanwhile, Socialist party leader, Antonio Zapata, continues to fill in as Acting Mayor....

Orihuela mountain blaze

Investigators suspect arson Fire fighters rushed to tackle a blaze that broke out in the Orihuela mountains at around 7pm on Wednesday. The fire originated on a mountain slope, in the orientation of the village of San Antón, facing the tunnel on the N-340. It was located on an area of grassland which is particularly difficult to access, so fire crews enlisted the help of two seaplanes which worked until nightfall to suffocate the flames. The initial assessment of experts investigating the incident was that it was caused by a spark from a length of electrical wiring left in the vicinity, which due to the extremely dry conditions and high temperatures caused the bush to catch fire. However, further investigation has ruled out this possibility, and all evidence now suggests that the fire may have been started deliberately. The investigating authorities refused to give any further details at this stage....

Guardamar Street Market and Leisure Fair starts today

A weekend of shopping, kids’ activities, live music and lace making Guardamar Town hall has organised the first local Street Market and Leisure Fair, which will take place along Avenida de los Pinos on 22nd, 23rd and 24th of August. Over twenty businesses have signed up to participate in the initiative, with representation from various sectors, from fashion and decor to dried fruit. The organisers explained the programme will include bouncy castles for children; demonstrations and musical performances by various artists from the municipality, such as the popular “Dúo Costablanca”; Vocalist, Ana Aldeguer; and Guitarist, Miguel Verdú. Various local clubs and associations will also pledge their support to the fayre, including ADIMAR, Cruz Roja and the Asociación de Bolilleras y Encajeras de Hilo, who will offer a fascinating lace making demonstrations each day. Programme Schedule Friday 22nd from 8pm. The Trade and Leisure Fair will be officially inaugurated by Mayoress Carmen Verdú Other activities will commence at 6pm, with, and fun activities for kids including a bouncy castle from 7pm.
