The AVE high speed train, which travels from Madrid to Alicante in just 3 hours and 15 minutes, could have a shuttle bus service connection from the penultimate stop in Villena to Torrevieja, according to the Mayor, Eduardo Dolón. He revealed that the national Department of Transportation has responded favourably to the city’s request, which was submitted by the company “ENATCAR S.A.”, the contract management group for public transport services. If the work is approved, the bus station at the Eras de la Sal will be transformed into the central AVE shuttle station for the MADRID-ALICANTE (VAC-055) route.
This is the final stage in the city’s application process, which means that the service could be operational as early as the 15th July, although this is dependent upon other administrative factors.
Dolón revealed that when approved, the Madrid to Torrevieja link will be operated as a pilot scheme for 3 months in the first instance, offering two daily connections during the morning and afternoon, although he did not wish to go into detail until final approval is granted. He did however comment on how pleased he is with the result, which will connect Torrevieja to the capital city, and intends to launch an intense promotional campaign once it gets the green light.
This article has been amended to say that the shuttle bus will connect with the AVE at Villena and not Alicante, as originally stated.
