Hundreds of people participated in the Romería (pilgrimage) of San Isidro Labrador in Rojales, between the start of the activities on Friday, right up to 9pm on Sunday. The principal activity, the pilgrimage yesterday (May 18th) started an hour later than planned because it was raining. The persistence of the rain was such that at first the possibility of postponing was considered. Finally, at 9am, the statue of the saint was taken from San Pedro Parish Church, arriving more than an hour later at El Recorral park.
The mayor of Rojales, Antonio Pérez hailed the devotion of residents of Rojales and other nearby municipalities for the patron saint of farmers, as “despite the persistent rain, the pilgrimage from the town centre to El Recorral over more than five kilometres attracted a big crowd of people”.
Once at El Recorral, a blessing was held, officiated by the priest and missionary from Rojales, Venancio Ortiz, who asked that the farmers get fair prices for their harvests.
Many of the people who came to the park to spend the day in the countryside were also able to enjoy the giant paella that was offered by Rojales Town Hall.
