International extravaganza in Quesada

A day of multicultural entertainment on Saturday A day to celebrate all things international is being held in Rojales on May 10th. Rojales is one of the most international municipalities in Alicante province, with a total of 71 nationalities residing there, according to its census, making up 74% of the 22,446 inhabitants, including 9,284 from the UK, compared to 5,246 Spaniards. They are followed by 1,614 Germans, 1,121 Dutch and 1,041 Norwegians, as well as Russians, Moroccans, Swedes, Irish and Belgians. Even the local council has no less than five councillors from other countries, including France, the UK and Norway. Mayor Antonio Pérez said that the aim of the International Day is to promote integration, which is already evident amongst the older members of the community, but especcially amongst the children who go to school together. The Plaza Blanca in the urbanisation Ciudad Quesada, where most of the municipality’s foreign residents live, will be the scene for entertainment and activities for all ages. Local Councillor for Residents Derek Monks explained that the inauguration will commence at 10am, followed by two hours of performances by singers and dancers representing a number of nationalities that live in the town. Porterhouse Blues for PCN

Charity fun day and jamming session in Torrevieja A Charity Fun Day to raise funds for Paul Cunningham Nurses Charity will be held at The Porterhouse, in Los Altos del Limonar, Torrevieja, on Saturday 31st May. PCN provides high quality nursing care to terminal prognosis patients in their own home, as well as offering support and advice to their loved ones. The charity operates in a similar way to the Macmillan Nurses in the UK, and any assistance given is funded entirely through fundraising efforts and voluntary donations. The party begins at 3pm with a Jamming Session, where local musicians are invited to drop in to give us a few tunes and all enjoy a good old sing-song. Bobby Dazzler will then take centre stage, serving up a selection of classics, before Lorna rounds things off from 9pm with karaoke and the perfect opportunity to hit the dance floor. Learn to earn in Pilar

Training, Employment and Education Fair on Wednesday Pilar de la Horadada will be the scene of the municipality’s second Training, Employment and Education Fair on Wednesday, May 7th. It has been organised by the Town Hall to show residents what options they have to decide what to do with their immediate future. The fair will be open in the Plaza de Campoamor from 10am until 2pm. It is primarily aimed at young people but anyone in the community who is looking for work can find out about what resources are available to them, assured Mayor José Fidel Ros, who added that they can also discover different ways of continuing their education through training. There will be information stands from businesses, universities and public organisations, as well as a series of talks, the first of which will take place at 10:30am and will cover questions relating to grants and subsidies that are available for training. Karaoke in the countryside

Take part in singing competitions in Orihuela’s rural villages A karaoke competition will be taking place in four of Orihuela’s rural villages during the month of June. Councillor for Youth Carolina Gracia presented the details of this event, which has been organised by the Town Hall “to boost the local economy and entertainment”. Called ‘Tu karaoke me suena’ (Your karaoke sounds familiar), the shows will be presented by well-known Spanish television presenter Antonio Hidalgo. To particpate in the contest, it is necessary to register, by calling 648 217 463. The performances will be on Friday, June 6th at the Parque la Atalaya in El Escorratel; Saturday, June 7th in the Plaza Maestro Antonio Gil Pardo in La Aparecida; Friday, June 13th in the Auditorio in San Bartolomé; and Saturday, June 14th in the Plaza de la Iglesia in La Matanza. Each show will start at 10pm and go on for about two hours, with additional entertainment by dancers and a DJ. A total of 15 contestants will take part each night, who will be selected in the order that they sign up. Valley voices concert

Multinational mixed choir in Benigembla and Benissa this month The Valley Voices multinational mixed choir will be performing two concerts for charity this month. The first will be in Benigembla at 7pm in the Syndicato on Thursday May 15th, and the second at 8pm in the Casa de Cultura in Benissa on Friday May 16th. The choir is based in the Vall del Pop and will feature guest artists including a cello soloist. Under the direction of musical director Aileen Lightfoot, their spring programme embraces songs from many countries, including Sweden, the USA, Africa, Spain and the UK, to name but a few. Tickets cost €8 each and are available on the door or can be reserved by calling either Benigembla on 96 558 1519 or Benissa on 96 551 8377.
